Highland Capital Management is a global financial firm that is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Highland Capital specializes in alternative credit management and has become one of the largest such companies in the industry. The company was formed by James Dondero and Mark Okada in 1990 as Protective Life Insurance Company. As the company evolved and grew, both internally and through acquisitions, eventually a new name was necessary and so they settled on Highland Capital Management. James Dondero serves as the firm’s President and Mark Okada is the Chief Investment Officer.
As a way to offer its clients diversity, Highland Capita Managementl is focused on assets such as hedge funds, real estate, collateralized loan obligations, and private equity. The company’s client based is made up of government entities such as public pension funds, high net worth individuals, endowments, and other corporations such as financial firms. As the firm has grown they have added additional offices in New York, Singapore, Seoul, and São Paulo.
Highland Capital Management has been involved in giving back to the community for many years. James Dondero has stated that while the company is global their giving is local. They have helped many charities around the Dallas area. In 2016 the company issued a challenge grant where they matched up to $1,000,000 in donations for The Family Place. This grant helped The Family Place complete their new Cental Dallas Counseling Center where they provide shelter and support for the victims of family violence. The center includes 13 emergency shelter bedrooms, counseling rooms for children and adults, a space for job-training, and a medical and dental center.
The company does not give back financially as executives of Highland Capital sit on the boards of local nonprofits. In November 2016 James Dondero was named to the Executive Board of the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. Highland Capital is also partnered with SMU with the Management Tower Scholars program which encourages students to pursue the field of public policy.
